Legal Officer — Nuclear Law at IAEA
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is seeking a Legal Officer for its Office of Legal Affairs in Vienna. This role involves advising on the international legal framework governing the peaceful use of nuclear energy, nuclear safety, and safeguards.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice on nuclear law, including conventions on nuclear safety, liability, and physical protection
- Draft and negotiate safeguards agreements, additional protocols, and cooperation agreements with Member States
- Advise on the legal aspects of nuclear verification and non-proliferation matters
- Support the development of international nuclear law instruments and legislative assistance to Member States
- Represent the Office of Legal Affairs in meetings, conferences, and diplomatic negotiations
Requirements
- Advanced degree in international law or nuclear law (LL.M. or Ph.D. preferred)
- 5-8 years of experience in international law, treaty law, or nuclear regulatory matters
- Knowledge of the international nuclear legal framework (Convention on Nuclear Safety, Vienna Convention)
- Experience with international organizations or diplomatic service is highly desirable
- Fluent in English; knowledge of French, Spanish, or other UN languages is an asset
