To become a lawyer (advocate) in Rwanda, you first earn at least a bachelor's degree in law. You then obtain a recognised certificate from the Institute of Legal Practice and Development (ILPD), the only accredited advocate-training centre, or an equivalent body. Next you apply to the Rwanda Bar Association, complete the supervised internship under a practising advocate, and pass the admission test administered by the Bar Association. Eligibility also requires Rwandan nationality and a clean record (including no genocide-related conviction). Finally, you take the advocate's oath before the Supreme Court and are enrolled by the Rwanda Bar Association, which regulates the profession under Law No. 83/2013.
