To become a lawyer in Ecuador you qualify as an abogado. First complete a university law degree (título de abogado) from an institution recognised by SENESCYT, then carry out the mandatory judicial pre-professional practice (currently 500 hours under Consejo de la Judicatura regulations). Ecuador does not require a bar examination; instead you must register in the Foro de Abogados through the Consejo de la Judicatura to obtain the credential that authorises you to practise. Foreign-trained lawyers must first have their degree registered and recognised by SENESCYT before they can enrol.
Practice is administered through the Consejo de la Judicatura (Council of the Judiciary), which maintains the Foro de Abogados registry that every practising lawyer must join; provincial colegios/foros de abogados serve as professional associations.
