To become a lawyer in Botswana you qualify as a legal practitioner (attorney). Earn an LLB degree from the University of Botswana or another prescribed university, then serve pupillage under a registered pupil master (or obtain an exemption) and pass the prescribed practical/bar examinations where required. The Law Society of Botswana's bar/admission examination covers five core subjects (Accounting for Lawyers, Administration of Estates, Civil Procedure, Criminal Procedure and Ethics) and is required mainly for those trained abroad or foreign attorneys. You then petition the High Court to be admitted and enrolled as a legal practitioner and apply to the Registrar for a practising certificate.
The Law Society of Botswana is the statutory professional body for legal practitioners, operating under the Legal Practitioners Act; admission to practise is granted by the High Court on petition, with notice to the Attorney-General and the Law Society.
