How do I become a lawyer in Turkey?

To become a lawyer (avukat) in Turkey, first graduate from a four-year Turkish law faculty, or get your foreign degree recognised through YOK equivalence (denklik). Candidates who enrolled in law school after 24 October 2019 and graduated after 31 March 2024 must pass the legal professions entrance exam (Hukuk Mesleklerine Giris Sinavi, HMGS) before starting training. You then complete a one-year legal internship (avukatlik staji), split between six months at the courthouse and six months under a practising lawyer, registered with your local bar association as a trainee (stajyer avukat). Once the bar approves your internship, you are admitted to that bar and may practise as an avukat, with all bars unified under the Union of Turkish Bar Associations (TBB).

Who regulates lawyers in Turkey?

Local bar associations (e.g. Istanbul Barosu, Ankara Barosu), unified nationally under the Union of Turkish Bar Associations (Turkiye Barolar Birligi, TBB), which coordinates the profession and oversees standards.
