How do I become a lawyer in Zimbabwe?
To become a lawyer in Zimbabwe you first complete an LLB (or BL Honours) law degree at an accredited Zimbabwean university. If your degree is 'generally designated' by the Council for Legal Education you are exempt from its professional examinations; as of SI 240 of 2021 the designated degrees include those from the University of Zimbabwe, Midlands State University, Great Zimbabwe University and Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University. Holders of other or foreign degrees must apply to the Council and pass its professional/conversion examinations, which cover areas like civil and criminal procedure, evidence, conveyancing, trust-account book-keeping and legal ethics. Once you meet the qualification requirements you apply to the High Court of Zimbabwe to be registered and admitted as a legal practitioner. You then join the Law Society of Zimbabwe and hold a valid practising certificate, which authorises you to practise law and appear in court. The whole route commonly takes around five to six years from starting your degree to admission.
