To become a lawyer (Rechtsanwalt) in Austria you first earn a university law degree (Mag.iur./Diplomstudium der Rechtswissenschaften). You then complete around five years of practical training, including a court-practice period (Gerichtspraxis) and at least three years as a trainee lawyer (Konzipient) in a law firm, plus the required professional-development courses. After meeting the practical-training requirement you sit and pass the Rechtsanwaltspruefung (bar examination, written and oral). The Austrian Bar (Oesterreichischer Rechtsanwaltskammertag / OERAK), the umbrella federation of the nine regional Rechtsanwaltskammern (bar chambers). Membership of the relevant regional bar chamber is mandatory to practise as a Rechtsanwalt.
