To become a lawyer (abogado) in Chile, first complete a university law degree and obtain the academic degree of Licenciado en Ciencias Juridicas (y Sociales). You then complete a mandatory period of supervised legal practice (practica profesional), commonly around six months and often served through the Corporaciones de Asistencia Judicial. Chile has no bar exam; the former qualifying examination was abolished. Once you have the degree and completed practice, and meet conditions such as good conduct and the age minimum, the Supreme Court of Chile (Corte Suprema) confers the title of abogado, which authorises you to practise; membership of the Colegio de Abogados is voluntary.
Distinctively, the professional title of abogado is conferred by the Supreme Court of Chile (Corte Suprema) in plenary session. The Colegio de Abogados de Chile is a professional association but membership is voluntary, so it is not a mandatory licensing regulator.
