How do I become a lawyer in Oman?

To become a practising advocate in Oman you must be an Omani national and hold a recognised degree in law or Sharia, attested by the Ministry of Higher Education. You then register as a trainee and complete a traineeship under a licensed Omani advocate, generally around two years. Under the reformed Advocacy and Legal Consultancy Law you must also complete the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs training programme and pass mandatory written exams, with separate exams required to advance to representation before the primary court, court of appeal and supreme court (replacing the previous apprenticeship-only system). The MJLA's committee for the affairs of advocates and legal consultants approves enrolment; non-Omanis may register only as legal consultants, not as advocates appearing in court.

Who regulates lawyers in Oman?

Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs (MJLA, mjla.gov.om), through its Committee for the Affairs of Advocates and Legal Consultants, licenses and regulates advocates and legal consultants in Oman.
