Austria has a structured civil-law profession in which the regulated advocate (Rechtsanwalt) is distinct from notaries and judges, and qualification is famously long and demanding. Lawyers work in private practice, corporate in-house roles, banking and finance, EU and regulatory work, and the courts, with the largest commercial and corporate market in Vienna. Complete a university law degree in Austria (Diplomstudium/Mag.iur. or equivalent), then undertake the required practical training (around five years total), including a court-practice period (Gerichtspraxis, at least about five months) and at least three years as a trainee lawyer (Rechtsanwaltsanwaerter/Konzipient) in a law firm.
