Zimbabwe has a fused legal profession in which qualified lawyers are admitted as legal practitioners who may both advise clients and appear in court, working in private law firms, the government (Attorney-General's Office, the National Prosecuting Authority, ministries), the judiciary, banks, insurers, telecoms, mining and agribusiness, NGOs and the UN system. Harare is the main legal hub, with Bulawayo a secondary centre. English is the working language of law and the courts.
Earn an LLB (or BL Honours) law degree. Holders of a degree that the Council for Legal Education has 'generally designated' are exempt from the Council's professional examinations; as of Statutory Instrument 240 of 2021 these include law degrees from the University of Zimbabwe, Midlands State University, Great Zimbabwe University and Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University. Holders of other or foreign degrees must apply to the Council and pass its professional/conversion examinations. You then apply to the High Court of Zimbabwe to be registered and admitted as a legal practitioner, and join the Law Society of Zimbabwe to hold a practising certificate.

To become a lawyer in Zimbabwe you first complete an LLB (or BL Honours) law degree at an accredited Zimbabwean university. If your degree is 'generally designated' by the Council for Legal Education you are exempt from its professional examinations; as of SI 240 of 2021 the designated degrees include those from the University of Zimbabwe, Midlands State University, Great Zimbabwe University and Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University. Holders of other or foreign degrees must apply to the Council and pass its professional/conversion examinations, which cover areas like civil and criminal procedure, evidence, conveyancing, trust-account book-keeping and legal ethics. Once you meet the qualification requirements you apply to the High Court of Zimbabwe to be registered and admitted as a legal practitioner. You then join the Law Society of Zimbabwe and hold a valid practising certificate, which authorises you to practise law and appear in court. The whole route commonly takes around five to six years from starting your degree to admission.
The Law Society of Zimbabwe (LSZ), established in 1981 under the Legal Practitioners Act (Chapter 27:07), registers and regulates legal practitioners and law firms. The Council for Legal Education (CLE), a statutory body established in 1992 under the same Act, sets the qualification standards for entry to the profession, determines which legal qualifications are 'designated', and administers the professional examinations.
