Job Description
The Bank of Canada is hiring a Legal Counsel for its Legal Services department at 234 Wellington Street in Ottawa, across from Parliament Hill. You will provide legal advice on financial regulation, monetary policy implementation, and compliance with the Bank of Canada Act.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice on the Bank of Canada Act, Payment Clearing and Settlement Act, and related financial legislation
- Advise on policy instruments, regulatory frameworks for financial market infrastructures, and systemic risk oversight
- Draft legal opinions on constitutional division of powers between federal and provincial financial regulators
- Support the Bank's relationship with the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI)
- Advise on government procurement, access to information requests, and privacy obligations under the Privacy Act
Requirements
- Called to the Bar in any Canadian province (LSO or Barreau preferred)
- 3-7 years post-call experience in financial regulation, banking law, or government legal services
- JD/LLB from a recognized Canadian law school
- Bilingual (English/French) required for Ottawa position
- Secret-level security clearance required
