Job Description

Avocat – EU Merger Control

Cleary Gottlieb's Brussels office on Rue de la Loi, in the shadow of the European Commission's Berlaymont building, is seeking a talented avocat to join its world-renowned EU Merger Control practice.

The Brussels office has been at the forefront of EU competition law for decades. You will work on landmark merger notifications under the EU Merger Regulation (EUMR), advising on complex Phase II proceedings, remedies design, and appeals to the General Court.

What You Will Do

  • Draft and file EU merger control notifications (Form CO and Short Form CO)
  • Conduct market definition analyses and competitive effects assessments
  • Design and negotiate remedy packages with the European Commission's Merger Task Force
  • Prepare submissions to DG Competition during Phase I and Phase II reviews
  • Coordinate multi-jurisdictional merger filings across ECN member authorities

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and manage EU merger notifications from pre-notification to clearance
  • Draft competition analysis and remedy proposals
  • Liaise with DG Competition case teams and Chief Economist Team
  • Research and advise on developments in EU merger control policy
  • Coordinate with Cleary's global offices on multi-jurisdictional filings

Requirements

  • Belgian Bar admission or equivalent EU qualification
  • Master in Law from a leading European university
  • 3-6 years of EU competition/merger control experience
  • Strong knowledge of EUMR, DG Competition merger review procedures, and relevant CJEU case law
  • Fluent in English; French or Dutch required for Belgian Bar matters
  • Experience with economic analysis and quantitative merger assessment tools is an advantage
  • College of Europe diploma or LL.M. in Competition Law is a plus
