Job Description

Counsel – EU Competition Law

Van Bael & Bellis, one of the world's leading EU competition law boutiques on Avenue Louise in Brussels' prestigious Ixelles district, is seeking an experienced Counsel to strengthen its competition practice.

The firm has been at the heart of EU competition law for nearly four decades, representing clients in some of the European Commission's most complex cartel investigations, merger proceedings, and abuse of dominance cases. This role offers a unique opportunity to practise at the highest level of EU antitrust law at a firm where competition is the core business.

What You Will Do

  • Lead cartel defence matters before DG Competition, including leniency and settlement procedures
  • Advise on EU and Belgian merger control proceedings and coordinate multi-jurisdictional filings
  • Represent clients in Article 102 TFEU abuse of dominance investigations in digital markets
  • Handle EU competition litigation before the General Court and CJEU
  • Advise on EU and Belgian competition compliance programmes
  • Manage client relationships and contribute to the firm's thought leadership in EU antitrust

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage complex EU competition law mandates
  • Represent clients before the European Commission, General Court, and CJEU
  • Develop the firm's competition law practice through business development and publications
  • Supervise associates and stagiaires on competition matters
  • Advise on competition compliance and antitrust risk management

Requirements

  • Admission to the Brussels Bar (Barreau/Balie) or equivalent EU qualification
  • Master in Law; LL.M. in Competition Law or College of Europe diploma strongly preferred
  • 8-12 years of dedicated EU competition law experience
  • Extensive experience with European Commission proceedings (cartels, mergers, or abuse cases)
  • Fluent in English; French and/or Dutch required
  • Published track record in EU competition law journals is an advantage
