Legal Counsel – Environmental & Regulatory

Umicore SA/NV, a global materials technology and recycling group headquartered on the Broekstraat in Brussels, is seeking a Legal Counsel specializing in environmental and regulatory law. Belgium's federated structure means environmental law is split between Flanders (VLAREM), Wallonia (Permis d'environnement), and Brussels-Capital (environmental permit regime), creating a uniquely complex regulatory landscape.

What You Will Do

• Advise on environmental permit applications and compliance across Belgium's three regions
• Ensure compliance with EU REACH/CLP chemical regulations and circular economy legislation
• Advise on soil contamination remediation obligations under Flemish (OVAM) and Walloon frameworks
• Support sustainability reporting under the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD)
• Manage environmental litigation and regulatory enforcement proceedings

• Provide environmental regulatory advisory to operations across Belgian regions
• Manage environmental permit applications and renewals
• Ensure REACH/CLP compliance for Umicore's product portfolio
• Support ESG and sustainability reporting and disclosure obligations
• Coordinate with environmental authorities in Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels-Capital

• Belgian Bar admission or equivalent legal qualification
• Master in Law; specialized Master in Environmental Law preferred
• 3-6 years of experience in environmental, regulatory, or sustainability law
• Knowledge of VLAREM, Brussels/Walloon environmental permit systems, and EU environmental directives
• Fluent in Dutch and English; French is a strong advantage for multi-regional compliance
• Experience in manufacturing, chemicals, or materials technology sector preferred
