Human Rights Legal Internship — UNAMI, Baghdad
UNAMI offers a 6-month unpaid internship for advanced law students and recent graduates interested in international human rights law, humanitarian law, and transitional justice in Iraq. This is a unique opportunity to work in one of the most significant UN political missions.
Duration & Compensation
Duration: 6 months
Compensation: Unpaid (UN internship policy). UNAMI provides office space, security arrangements, and access to UN compound facilities. Travel and living expenses are the intern's responsibility.
Start Date: Biannual intake (January and July)
What You Will Learn
- Human rights monitoring and documentation methodology
- UN human rights reporting and treaty body mechanisms
- Transitional justice and accountability processes in post-conflict settings
- Legal analysis of Iraqi legislation against international standards
- Engagement with government, judiciary, and civil society on rule of law

Requirements
- Enrolled in or recently completed LLM in international human rights law, public international law, or humanitarian law
- Strong academic background in international law
- Fluency in English; Arabic or Kurdish language skills strongly preferred
- Ability to work in a challenging security environment
- Research and analytical writing skills
- Medical clearance for Iraq duty station
