Job Description
The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) seeks an Associate Legal Adviser to join its Africa Regional Programme based in Nairobi. The role involves conducting legal research, preparing legal analyses on human rights and rule of law issues across Africa, and supporting advocacy efforts with regional and national institutions. The adviser will contribute to strategic litigation initiatives, draft legal submissions, and engage with African human rights mechanisms.
Responsibilities
Conduct legal research and prepare analyses on human rights and rule of law issues. Support strategic litigation and amicus curiae interventions. Draft legal submissions, policy briefs, and advocacy materials. Engage with regional human rights mechanisms including the African Commission and African Court. Support capacity building programs for legal professionals across Africa.
Requirements
LLB degree from a recognized university with admission to the Bar. Minimum 3-5 years of post-qualification experience in human rights law, constitutional law, or international law. Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills. Experience working with African regional human rights mechanisms is an advantage. Fluency in English required; French is a strong advantage.
