Job Description
The Crown Law Office is seeking Crown Counsel for its Criminal Group in Wellington. Crown Law is the New Zealand government's principal legal advisor, headed by the Solicitor-General, and is responsible for conducting criminal appeals on behalf of the Crown in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of New Zealand. This is a rare opportunity to appear as counsel in New Zealand's highest courts.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct criminal appeals on behalf of the Crown in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of New Zealand
- Prepare written submissions and oral arguments on complex points of criminal law, evidence, and sentencing
- Advise the Solicitor-General on significant criminal law issues including the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990 (NZBORA)
- Provide legal opinions to government departments on criminal justice policy and law reform
- Appear as counsel in high-profile appeals involving serious criminal offending
Requirements
- Admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand with a current Practising Certificate
- 4-7 years PQE in criminal law, prosecution, or appellate practice
- Strong advocacy skills and experience appearing in the District Court, High Court, or above
- Knowledge of the Crimes Act 1961, Evidence Act 2006, Sentencing Act 2002, and NZBORA
- New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency (security vetting required)
