Job Description

CMS Sofia is seeking an Environmental & Climate Law Associate to address growing client demand in environmental compliance, sustainability regulation, and EU Green Deal implementation. Bulgaria's EU-mandated green transition is generating complex legal questions around emissions trading, waste management, and environmental permitting. This role offers meaningful work at the intersection of law and sustainability.

Responsibilities

Advising on environmental impact assessments (EIA) and strategic environmental assessments (SEA); Supporting clients with IPPC/IED permitting and compliance; Advising on EU ETS obligations and carbon credit transactions; Providing guidance on waste management licensing and hazardous waste regulations; Advising on contaminated land liability and remediation obligations; Supporting renewable energy projects with environmental permitting; Monitoring EU Green Deal, Fit for 55, and CBAM legislative developments affecting Bulgarian businesses.

Requirements

Master's degree in Law; 3-5 years of experience in environmental, planning, or regulatory law; Knowledge of the Environmental Protection Act, Clean Air Act, Waste Management Act, and Water Act; Understanding of EIA/SEA procedures and IPPC permitting; Familiarity with EU environmental directives and the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS); Fluent English; Commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
