Job Description
UNHCR's Kenya office (covering Dadaab, Kakuma, and urban refugee operations in Nairobi) seeks a Legal Advisor to support refugee status determination (RSD), protection monitoring, and legal assistance programmes. Kenya hosts over 500,000 refugees, making this one of UNHCR's largest operations globally.
Responsibilities
Provide legal advice on refugee status determination procedures. Monitor and report on protection concerns in refugee camps and urban settings. Liaise with the Department of Refugee Services (DRS), judiciary, and civil society partners. Support capacity building of government counterparts on refugee law.
Requirements
LLB/LLM with focus on international refugee law, human rights, or international humanitarian law. 5+ years legal experience in refugee protection, RSD, or related fields. Knowledge of the Kenya Refugees Act 2021 and 1951 Refugee Convention. Fluency in English; Kiswahili and/or French an advantage.
