Job Description
Rio Tinto's Perth office at Central Park, 152-158 St Georges Terrace is seeking a Legal Counsel specialising in Native Title and Aboriginal heritage law. Following heightened focus on Indigenous engagement, this critical role supports Rio Tinto's Pilbara operations in maintaining respectful and legally compliant relationships with Traditional Owners across Western Australia.
Key Responsibilities
- Negotiate and manage Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUAs) and Native Title agreements under the Native Title Act 1993
- Advise on compliance with the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 (WA) and the new Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act
- Support engagement with Prescribed Bodies Corporate (PBCs) and Traditional Owner groups
- Handle Federal Court Native Title proceedings and mediations before the National Native Title Tribunal
Requirements
- Admitted as a solicitor in WA; 4-7 years PQE in Native Title, Aboriginal heritage, or public law
- Experience with Native Title Act 1993 and ILUA negotiation
- Cultural sensitivity and experience working with Indigenous communities
- Willingness to travel to Pilbara communities
