Job Description
The United Nations Office of Legal Affairs is seeking a Legal Officer at the P-3 level for its Nairobi duty station. The role involves providing legal advice on a broad range of international law issues including UN privileges and immunities, commercial contracts, institutional law, and peacekeeping-related legal matters. Nairobi hosts major UN offices including UNEP and UN-Habitat, making this a strategic position for international legal practice.
Responsibilities
Provide legal advice on privileges and immunities, institutional law, and commercial contracts. Draft, review, and negotiate agreements on behalf of the UN. Conduct legal research on international law issues. Advise on disputes, claims, and arbitration matters. Prepare legal opinions and memoranda for senior management. Support the work of intergovernmental bodies and treaty bodies.
Requirements
Advanced university degree (LLM) in international law, preferably public international law. A first-level university degree (LLB) with 2 additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in international law, including legal advisory work in an international organization. Fluency in English required; knowledge of French is desirable.
