GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Office of Guardian ad Litem (GAL) provides high-quality legal advocacy and representation for juveniles involved in abuse and neglect, children in need of supervision, and delinquency proceedings within the complex field of juvenile law. Pursuant to Wyoming Statutes 14-3-416 and 14-12-101, the appointment of a Guardian ad Litem is required in child abuse and neglect cases to ensure the best interests of children are effectively represented.
This essential position will manage a full caseload within Wyoming’s First Judicial District and offers the opportunity to participate in complex termination of parental rights cases and appeals before the Wyoming Supreme Court, at the discretion of the Director and Chief Trial and Appellate Attorney.
The successful candidate will represent clients in a variety of court proceedings, including shelter care hearings, initial appearances, adjudicatory hearings, disposition hearings, review hearings, and permanency hearings. Responsibilities also include attending non-court meetings such as IEPs, MDTs, family partnership meetings, and other proceedings relevant to client cases. In addition, the Guardian ad Litem will draft and file motions, collaborate closely with legal assistants, and serve as a liaison between the Office of Guardian ad Litem, Judicial District One, and other juvenile justice stakeholders, including the District Attorney’s Office, Department of Family Services, CASA, and juvenile court personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.
- Represent juveniles involved in A/N, CHINS, and delinquency in Laramie County.
- Perform and/or manage "caseloads" which include interviewing and advising clients on legal issues and obligations.
- Investigate and analyze case materials and conduct legal research.
- Prepares and submits legal documents to clients and courts, and appears in court for various hearings.
- Participate in projects directly offered by the Office of GAL and other stakeholders.
- In-house training for all agency attorneys when appropriate, provide Supervising GAL with updates on case development, compile IV-E numbers for them, and then provide them to the Director as well.
- Willing to tackle more complex termination of parental rights cases and appeals on behalf of juveniles statewide.
