Job Description
Privacy Counsel — GDPR & Global Data Protection (Fully Remote)
Shopify is hiring a Privacy Counsel to join our distributed legal team. You'll be the go-to advisor on data privacy matters, helping Shopify navigate GDPR, CCPA, and emerging global privacy regulations.
This role is fully remote — work from anywhere globally. Shopify is a digital-by-default company, and our legal team operates across time zones with async-first collaboration tools.
What You'll Do:
- Advise product and engineering teams on privacy-by-design principles
- Conduct privacy impact assessments for new features and data processing activities
- Draft and review data processing agreements, privacy policies, and consent mechanisms
- Monitor global privacy legislation and advise on compliance strategies
- Support responses to data subject access requests and regulatory inquiries

Responsibilities
Serve as primary privacy legal advisor for product launches. Conduct DPIAs and advise on data processing activities. Draft and negotiate data processing agreements with vendors and partners. Monitor regulatory developments across GDPR, CCPA, and emerging frameworks. Train cross-functional teams on privacy compliance best practices.
Requirements
JD or LLM with focus on data privacy law. 3-5 years of experience in privacy law, data protection, or related practice. Deep knowledge of GDPR, CCPA, and international privacy frameworks. CIPP/E or CIPP/US certification preferred. Experience with privacy impact assessments and data mapping.
