Senior Legal Counsel
Position Overview
Job Description
LemFi (Series B) is building the go-to financial app for the Global South.
Moving to a new country shouldn’t mean starting from zero. That's why our team of 400+ spanning 20+ countries is building a financial ecosystem that helps immigrants stay connected to home, build stability, and create wealth regardless of where they are from or where they live.
What began as fast, affordable remittances is now evolving into a complete platform for multi-currency accounts, payments, credit, and long-term financial growth.
With millions of users across the globe, we process over $1B in monthly transactions to 30+ countries, proving that borders shouldn't limit financial opportunity.
The Role
You will be the engine behind LemFi’s global legal, regulatory, and expansion strategy. Your primary focus will be providing high-impact legal counsel across Europe and African markets, ensuring the company operates safely and confidently as we scale.
This is not a traditional "back-office" legal role. You will be a key driver of inorganic growth (M&A), the guardian of regulatory frameworks in emerging markets, and the primary legal partner for Product teams during new launches. You won’t just review contracts—you will shape the legal infrastructure that allows LemFi to enter new territories and launch innovative financial products at pace.
How You’ll Contribute
Lead M&A & Strategic Transactions: Spearhead legal due diligence, structuring, and execution for international acquisitions and joint ventures. You will ensure seamless post-merger integration of legal and regulatory licenses.
Licensing Applications: Act as the legal architect for the license applications together with the general managers and support all kinds of paperwork and interaction with government officials.
Navigate Regulatory Frameworks: Proactively map out and manage complex regulatory requirements (EMI, PI, Banking licenses) across multiple jurisdictions, ensuring our license portfolio supports our long-term roadmap.
Advise & Guide: Offer expert counsel on FinTech operations, privacy laws (GDPR/NDPR), and international corporate matters, acting as a bridge between technical product needs and legal constraints.
Strengthen Privacy & Data Protection: Enforce strategies for cross-border data transfers and consent mechanisms, ensuring our user data remains secure as we scale across continents.
Draft & Negotiate High-Stakes Contracts: Lead negotiations for critical partnership agreements and vendor contracts that underpin our product infrastructure and global expansion.
Identify & Mitigate Risks: Provide proactive risk assessments for new market entries, assessing the political and regulatory stability of target regions.
Who You Are
A Growth Catalyst: You understand that "legal" shouldn't be a bottleneck; you find creative, compliant paths to say "yes" to business opportunities. You are a “lets see how we can do it” person, more than a “no we cannot”.
A Deal-Maker: You have a "transactional mindset" and can manage the fast-paced intensity of an M&A deal or a high-pressure product launch.
Strategic & Detail-Oriented: You can zoom out to see the 5-year global strategy and zoom in to spot a compliance loophole in a 50-page regulatory filing.
Cross-Functional Partner: You speak the languages of Product Managers, Engineers, and Regulators with equal fluency.
What You’ll Bring
Educational Excellence: A Juris Doctor (JD), LLM, or equivalent law degree from a reputable institution.
Relevant Experience: At least 7+ years of legal experience (ideally a mix of top-tier firm and in-house), with significant exposure to FinTech, M&A, and Regulatory Counsel.
Expansion Track Record: Proven experience in managing international corporate transactions and navigating regulatory bodies in Europe and Africa.
Product Fluency: Experience working directly with product teams to launch regulated financial services (e.g., cards, lending, or cross-border payments).
Negotiation Prowess: Excellent drafting and negotiation skills with a focus on commercial outcomes.
