What We Are Looking For:
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior VoIP Engineer with deep expertise in SIP and carrier-grade VoIP environments as an instrumental part of Bandwidth’s Network Operations Engineering team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience working with carrier interconnects, SIP trunking, interoperability testing, and advanced troubleshooting. This role will be critical for our voice infrastructure, ensuring reliable and secure SIP connectivity across multiple carrier platforms and enterprise environments.
What You'll Do:
- Interoperability: Conduct detailed interoperability testing between carrier platforms, SBCs, servers, and softswitches; resolve SIP signaling mismatches and codec issues.
- Carrier Interconnects: Design, configure, and maintain SIP trunking solutions with multiple carriers; ensure reliability, compliance, and optimal call routing.
- Advanced Troubleshooting: Act as the highest-level escalation point for complex SIP and RTP problems, including one-way audio, call setup failures, and call feature failures
- Diagnostics & Analysis: Use advanced troubleshooting tools (Wireshark/packet analysis, SIPp, HEPIC, Empirix, etc.) to capture and analyze SIP call flows and media streams.
- System Integration: Collaborate with network and security teams to integrate SIP services through network equipment, SIP proxy servers, and routing policies.
- Automation: Create automations to reduce operations burden, find ways to automate manual work via scripting, and identify operational inefficiencies
- Vendor/Carrier Collaboration: Partner with internal teams, carriers, and service providers to validate solutions, perform escalations, and ensure SIP trunk functionality.
- Documentation: Create and maintain detailed documentation, including SIP call flow diagrams, carrier interconnect standards, and troubleshooting guides.
- Mentorship: Provide guidance and training to junior engineers and operations staff on SIP fundamentals and troubleshooting methodologies
What You Need:
- 7+ years of hands-on VoIP engineering experience, with a strong focus on carrier SIP trunking and interoperability.
- Expert-level knowledge of SIP signaling (INVITE, BYE, REGISTER, re-INVITE, UPDATE, PRACK, REFER, etc.), SDP negotiation, RTP/RTCP, and SIP headers.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot complex SIP interoperability issues across different carrier platforms and SBCs.
- Strong experience with Session Border Controllers (SBCs) and SIP proxies (e.g., Ribbon, AudioCodes, Oracle/Acme Packet, OpenSIPS,Kamailio, etc.).
- Proficiency with diagnostic tools: Wireshark, sngrep, Homer/HEP, SIPp, Empirix, etc.
- Solid networking knowledge: IP, DNS, subnetting, VLANs, routing protocols.
- Strong Linux administration skills for VoIP applications and troubleshooting.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Bonus Points:
- Direct experience with carrier VoIP platforms and carrier-to-carrier SIP interconnects.
- Experience with ENUM, number portability (LNP), routing databases and logic, and SS7-to-SIP interworking.
- Familiarity with SIP security (TLS, SRTP), and regulatory compliance (e.g., STIR/SHAKEN, E911, lawful intercept).
- Background in softswitch architecture and VoIP core platforms.
- Scripting/automation skills (Python, Bash, Ansible) for provisioning and troubleshooting workflows.
- Industry certifications in SIP, SBCs, or carrier VoIP technologies (SSCA®, Ribbon, AudioCodes, Oracle/Acme Packet, etc.).
