Maritime Law Intern — Fenech & Fenech
Fenech & Fenech, Malta's pre-eminent maritime law firm, offers a legal procurator internship in its Shipping and Maritime Law department in Valletta. This is a rare opportunity to train in maritime law within the jurisdiction that operates Europe's largest ship registry — working on vessel registrations under the Merchant Shipping Act (Cap. 234), ship finance, admiralty proceedings, and international maritime regulatory compliance.
The intern will work directly with Malta's leading maritime advocates on live matters, attend hearings at the Civil Court sitting in its admiralty jurisdiction, and gain exposure to the international maritime conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC 2006) as implemented under the Malta flag. Responsibilities
- Assist with vessel registration and de-registration documentation under Cap. 234
- Research maritime law questions and prepare legal memoranda
- Attend admiralty court hearings and assist with pleading preparation
- Support ship finance transactions including mortgage documentation review
- Draft correspondence with Transport Malta and the Malta Maritime Authority
- Assist with maritime lien research and vessel arrest documentation
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed the LL.D. programme at the University of Malta
- Strong interest in maritime and admiralty law
- Basic knowledge of the Merchant Shipping Act (Cap. 234) and Malta ship registry
- Understanding of international maritime law and conventions
- Strong English legal writing skills; Maltese proficiency required
- Completed or enrolled in IMO IMLI courses advantageous
