Position Overview
Internship Description
The SIC offers a 6-month Judicatura placement in the Industrial Property Division (Delegatura para la Propiedad Industrial) for final-year Derecho students completing their mandatory judicial internship. The programme provides hands-on experience in trademark examination, patent prosecution, and IP enforcement at Colombia's principal IP authority.
Judicantes work directly with IP examiners and legal professionals on trademark opposition proceedings, patentability assessments, and enforcement actions. The SIC processes over 40,000 trademark applications annually, providing exceptional caseload exposure. This placement fulfils Judicatura requirements while offering specialised IP training.
Responsibilities
- Reviewing trademark applications for registrability under Decisión 486
- Assisting examiners with trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings
- Conducting prior art searches for patent applications
- Preparing analysis memoranda on IP enforcement cases
- Researching comparative IP law and international treaty obligations (TRIPS, Madrid Protocol)
Requirements
- Final-year Derecho student or recent graduate completing Judicatura
- Interest in intellectual property, trademarks, or patent law
- Knowledge of Decisión 486 de la Comunidad Andina and Colombian IP legislation
- Strong research and analytical skills
- Detail-oriented with ability to manage multiple case files simultaneously
