Job Description

Banking & Finance Attorney — BLC Robert & Associates

BLC Robert & Associates is recruiting a mid-level Attorney for its Banking & Finance practice at its Port Louis offices. Mauritius's banking sector — regulated by the Bank of Mauritius under the Banking Act 2004 — is the most developed in the Indian Ocean region, with major international banks, domestic commercial banks, and offshore banking units operating from the island.

The Attorney will work on syndicated lending, project finance, trade finance, and regulatory compliance under the Banking Act 2004 and the Bank of Mauritius Guideline on Credit Concentration Risk. The role involves daily engagement with the Bank of Mauritius, the Financial Intelligence and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2002 (FIAMLA) framework, and the Supreme Court of Mauritius on debt recovery matters — providing a comprehensive banking law practice in Mauritius's financial capital.

Responsibilities

  • Draft and review loan agreements, security documents, and guarantee instruments under Mauritian law
  • Advise on regulatory compliance with the Banking Act 2004 and Bank of Mauritius guidelines
  • Support syndicated lending, project finance, and structured finance transactions
  • Handle debt recovery proceedings before the Supreme Court of Mauritius
  • Conduct due diligence on borrowers and collateral under Mauritius's Code Civil and Inscription of Privileges and Mortgages Act
  • Advise on FIAMLA compliance and anti-money laundering obligations for banking clients

Requirements

  • Attorney admitted by the Mauritius Bar Council with 4–7 years' post-admission experience
  • Strong background in banking and finance law including loan documentation and security creation
  • Knowledge of the Banking Act 2004, Bank of Mauritius guidelines, and FIAMLA
  • Experience with project finance, syndicated lending, or structured finance transactions
  • Understanding of cross-border lending structures and offshore banking unit regulations
  • LL.B. from a recognised institution; banking law specialisation preferred
  • Fluency in English; French proficiency advantageous
