Job Description

The United Nations Environment Programme, headquartered in Nairobi, seeks a Legal Counsel to provide legal advice on international environmental law, multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs), and institutional matters. This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of international law and environmental policy from UNEP's global headquarters.

Responsibilities

Provide legal opinions on international environmental agreements including the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions. Advise on institutional and governance matters related to UNEP's mandate. Review and negotiate cooperation agreements, host country agreements, and MOUs. Represent UNEP in legal proceedings and arbitration.

Requirements

Advanced degree in law (LLM or equivalent) with specialization in international law, environmental law, or public international law. Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible legal experience. Fluency in English required; French is desirable. Experience with UN system or international organizations preferred.
