Training Contract — Herbert Smith Freehills, Broadgate, London

Herbert Smith Freehills is inviting applications for its September 2027 Training Contract intake at Exchange House, Broadgate, in the City of London. HSF offers one of the most highly regarded training contracts in the UK, with particular strength in disputes, corporate, and finance.

Over two years, trainees rotate through four seats and have the opportunity to spend time in the firm's award-winning disputes practice, which is the largest in the City. International secondments are available in offices including Hong Kong, New York, Tokyo, and Sydney.

Training Contract Details

  • Duration: 2-year Training Contract (4 x 6-month seats)
  • Start date: September 2027 intake
  • Location: Exchange House, Broadgate, City of London
  • Disputes specialism: Opportunity to complete two disputes seats
  • International: Secondments available across the firm's global network

Eligibility: Open to final-year LLB/GDL students or graduates completing the SQE. Career changers and non-law graduates are welcome.

Responsibilities

  • Complete four six-month seats, with the option to specialise in disputes
  • Work on complex litigation, arbitration, corporate, and finance matters
  • Draft witness statements, legal research, and transactional documents
  • Attend hearings in the Business and Property Courts and international arbitrations
  • Participate in pro bono work and community engagement initiatives
  • Benefit from a structured training programme with regular feedback and mentoring

Requirements

  • On track for or hold a minimum 2:1 degree in any discipline
  • Strong academic record with demonstrable analytical ability
  • Completion of or enrolment in the SQE, LPC, or equivalent qualification pathway
  • Interest in commercial litigation, international arbitration, or transactional law
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Team-oriented mindset with resilience and adaptability
  • Right to work in the United Kingdom
