Internship Description

The Commerce Commission offers a paid 12-week legal internship in its Competition branch in Wellington. The Commission is New Zealand's primary competition and consumer protection regulator, and this internship provides hands-on exposure to merger review, cartel investigations, and market studies under the Commerce Act 1986.

Programme Details

  • Duration: 12 weeks (flexible start date)
  • Compensation: Paid — approximately NZ$900-1,000/week
  • Eligibility: 2nd or 3rd year LLB students at a New Zealand university

What You Will Do

  • Assist the Competition team with merger clearance analysis and market definition under Part 3 of the Commerce Act 1986
  • Research competition law issues including cartel conduct (s30), anti-competitive agreements (s27), and market power (s36)
  • Support ongoing market studies (groceries, building supplies, fuel) with legal research and data analysis
  • Attend Commission meetings and external stakeholder consultations

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in 2nd or 3rd year of LLB at a New Zealand university
  • Interest in competition law, regulatory economics, or public policy
  • Strong academic record (B+ average or above)
  • New Zealand citizen or permanent resident preferred
