Legal Intern — Regulatory Affairs — MFSA
The Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) offers a legal internship in its Regulatory Affairs division at its Birkirkara offices. The MFSA is Malta's single financial services regulator — supervising banking, insurance, investment services, pensions, and virtual financial assets — and this internship provides unparalleled insight into the regulatory side of Malta's financial services industry from inside the regulator itself.
The intern will assist Legal Officers with licence application processing, regulatory research, policy drafting, and EU regulatory transposition work. This is an exceptional opportunity for an aspiring financial services lawyer to understand regulation from the regulator's perspective — experience that is highly valued by law firms and financial institutions alike.
Responsibilities
- Assist with processing licence applications and preparing authorisation documentation
- Research financial services regulatory questions and prepare internal memoranda
- Support policy drafting and public consultation processes
- Assist with EU regulatory transposition analysis (CRD, MiFID II, AIFMD, Solvency II)
- Attend supervisory meetings and assist with inspection preparation
- Maintain regulatory databases and track legislative developments
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in the LL.D. programme at the University of Malta
- Strong academic record in commercial law, banking law, and EU law
- Interest in financial services regulation and regulatory policy
- Understanding of the MFSA Act (Cap. 330) and key supervised legislation
- Strong research and analytical skills
- Bilingual English and Maltese essential
