Training Contract — Slaughter and May, City of London

Slaughter and May, widely regarded as the most prestigious law firm in the City of London, is accepting applications for its September 2027 Training Contract intake. A Slaughter and May training contract is the gold standard of the UK legal profession, offering unparalleled training in corporate and commercial law.

Over two years, trainees complete four six-month seats and are given significant responsibility from the outset. The firm's small trainee intake ensures exceptional supervision, mentoring, and exposure to the highest-quality transactional work in the UK market.

Training Contract Details

  • Duration: 2-year Training Contract (4 x 6-month seats)
  • Start date: September 2027 intake
  • Location: One Bunhill Row, City of London
  • Trainee intake: Approximately 80 per year (deliberately small for quality of training)
  • Qualification: Industry-leading retention rate

Eligibility: Open to final-year LLB/GDL students or graduates completing the SQE. The firm actively recruits from all academic disciplines and backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Complete four six-month seats across the firm's practice areas, including a mandatory corporate seat
  • Work directly with partners and senior associates on the firm's highest-value mandates
  • Draft transaction documents, legal research memoranda, and board minutes
  • Attend client meetings, negotiations, and completions
  • Participate in the firm's best-in-class training programme
  • Develop into a commercially astute, technically excellent solicitor

Requirements

  • On track for or hold a minimum 2:1 degree in any discipline
  • Outstanding academic record demonstrating intellectual excellence
  • Completion of or enrolment in the SQE, LPC, or equivalent pathway
  • Evidence of commercial awareness and genuine interest in corporate law
  • Exceptional analytical reasoning and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach to work
  • Right to work in the United Kingdom
