Tax & Revenue Law Apprenticeship — John Wilson Partners (Galle)
John Wilson Partners is offering a 6-month paid apprenticeship in its Tax and Revenue Law practice, based in Galle. This apprenticeship is designed for law graduates completing the mandatory 6-month BASL apprenticeship requirement and provides specialist training in Sri Lanka's evolving tax regulatory framework.
The apprentice will assist with tax advisory work under the Inland Revenue Act No. 24 of 2017, VAT compliance, and tax dispute resolution. Based in historic Galle — a major commercial centre in the Southern Province — the apprentice will gain exposure to tax matters affecting the tourism and fishing industries, small and medium enterprises, and property transactions in southern Sri Lanka. The firm's Galle base also provides access to the District Court of Galle for tax appeal proceedings.
Responsibilities
- Assist Attorneys-at-Law with tax advisory research under the Inland Revenue Act No. 24 of 2017
- Research VAT, withholding tax, and economic service charge compliance issues
- Draft basic tax opinion letters and advisory memoranda under supervision
- Observe proceedings at the Tax Appeals Commission and District Court of Galle
- Assist with tax compliance documentation for corporate clients
- Maintain research files on legislative developments in Sri Lankan taxation
Requirements
- LL.B. from a recognised Sri Lankan university or Sri Lanka Law College
- Eligible for the mandatory 6-month BASL apprenticeship under the Judicature Act
- Interest in tax law, revenue regulation, and fiscal policy
- Knowledge of the Inland Revenue Act No. 24 of 2017 and VAT Act
- Good numerical aptitude and attention to detail
- English and Sinhala proficiency required
- Based in or willing to relocate to Galle for the full 6-month period
