Job Description

Codelco is hiring a mid-level Environmental Mining lawyer for a position based in Concepcion, Chile's second-largest metropolitan area and a strategic hub for Codelco's southern operations. The role involves managing environmental compliance for Codelco's mining operations in central-southern Chile, including El Teniente (the world's largest underground copper mine) in the O'Higgins Region.

The associate will manage environmental impact assessments, mine closure planning under Ley 20.551 (Ley de Cierre de Faenas Mineras), water rights, and community relations in regions with strong environmental consciousness. Concepcion's proximity to the Universidad de Concepcion — one of Chile's top law faculties — and the Biobio Region's environmental regulatory activity make it an important legal hub.

Responsibilities

  • Managing environmental compliance for El Teniente and southern operations
  • Coordinating mine closure plans under Ley 20.551 and Sernageomin regulations
  • Advising on water rights management and DGA regulatory proceedings
  • Managing relations with the Superintendencia del Medio Ambiente for southern operations
  • Supporting environmental due diligence for Codelco's expansion projects

Requirements

  • Licenciatura en Ciencias Juridicas and juramento ante la Corte Suprema
  • 3-6 years of experience in environmental, mining, or natural resources law
  • Knowledge of Ley 19.300, Ley 20.551 (mine closure), and Codigo de Aguas
  • Experience with SEA, SMA, and Tribunal Ambiental de Santiago or Valdivia proceedings
  • Understanding of tailings management regulations and Sernageomin safety requirements
  • English proficiency for coordination with Codelco's Santiago headquarters
