Job Description

Senior Legal Adviser, Commercial Contracts — BP plc, St James's Square

BP plc is seeking a Senior Legal Adviser to join its Commercial Legal team at St James's Square, London. This role focuses on high-value commercial contracts across BP's global operations, including upstream oil and gas, trading, and new energy ventures. The Commercial Legal team supports BP's business units worldwide and plays a critical role in the company's strategy and operations.

You will negotiate and advise on complex commercial agreements with a value often exceeding hundreds of millions of pounds, working closely with BP's trading, procurement, and operations teams.

Contract Types

  • Upstream joint operating agreements (JOAs) and production sharing contracts (PSCs)
  • LNG sale and purchase agreements
  • Commodity trading agreements (ISDA, EFET, NAESB)
  • Major procurement and services contracts
  • Technology licensing and digital transformation agreements

Responsibilities

  • Negotiate and draft high-value commercial contracts for BP's global operations
  • Advise on upstream JOAs, farm-in/farm-out agreements, and production sharing contracts
  • Support BP's trading business on ISDA, EFET, and other master trading agreements
  • Manage external counsel relationships and budgets
  • Provide commercial legal training to business teams
  • Advise on contractual disputes and manage pre-litigation resolution strategies

Requirements

  • Qualified Solicitor of England and Wales with 7-10 years PQE in commercial contracts or energy law
  • Extensive experience negotiating complex commercial agreements in the energy sector
  • Knowledge of AIPN model contracts, ISDA Master Agreements, and commodity trading documentation
  • Strong understanding of English contract law and international commercial arbitration
  • In-house experience at a major energy company or commodities trader is highly preferred
  • Ability to manage a portfolio of matters independently with minimal supervision
