About the Job: Join our dynamic Human Resources (HR) Risk Management team as we seek talented and driven individuals to fill our Claims Adjuster I position! You will handle liability, worker's compensation, and subrogation claims in this crucial role through meticulous investigation, skillful evaluation, and decisive disposition. You will play a pivotal role in making informed decisions pertaining to the City’s liability and authorizing settlements based on verifiable damages. As a Claims Adjuster I, you will:
  • Investigate liability claims against the City; schedule interviews with City staff, claimants, and the public, virtually and in-person, for the purpose of data collection; and analyze and evaluate the city's liability exposure and compensatory damages
  • Investigate employee injury (Workers’ Compensation) claims, determine compensability, coordinate treatment, and process filings as necessary
  • Participate in subrogation of claims for the City by actively pursuing third parties for payment
  • Assess and evaluate the facts, damages, and extent of injuries and property damage
  • Recommend/set reserves in determining legal rights of recovery; monitor and assess claim reserves throughout the claim life
  • Mitigate, negotiate, and prepare settlement agreements up to established authority levels
  • Respond to public and staff inquiries in a courteous and timely manner; provide information within the area of assignment
  • Thoroughly document claim activity in claims database; provide prompt detailed responses to appropriate parties including claimants and attorneys
  • Work with employees, citizens, stakeholders, the Division of Workers’ Compensation, and attorneys to review and settle claims
  • Document files; provide a sound tracking system for reporting and closing cases; and establish and maintain record
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:

Knowledge of:
  • Colorado Governmental Immunity Act (CGIA)
  • The Colorado Workers’ Compensation statutes and rules
  • Claims investigation to determine liability, compensability, negotiate, and settle claims according to city's and state’s laws, policies and procedures
  • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping evidence preservation, and technical report preparation
  • Modern office technology and supporting software programs and database applications

Ability to:
  • Learn and apply pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations
  • Apply the Colorado Governmental Immunity Act (CGIA) to incoming claims to determine the city's immunity
  • Apply Colorado Workers’ Compensation statutes to incoming employee injury reports to determine compensability
  • Stay up to date on requirements pertaining to claims law, state compensation law, policies, procedures, benefits, and damage assessment methods
  • Read and review property and auto estimates for damage
  • Review medical notes as they apply to claims
  • Seek information from various sources and initiate projects
  • Engage in advanced negotiating and settlement meetings
