Job Description

Legislative Drafter at the Attorney General's Chambers

The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) is recruiting an experienced Legislative Drafter to join its Drafting Division in Bandar Seri Begawan. The role involves drafting primary and subsidiary legislation for all government ministries, ensuring that Brunei's laws are clear, consistent, and aligned with the Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) national philosophy and international obligations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft primary legislation (Acts and Emergency Orders) and subsidiary legislation (Orders, Rules, Regulations) for government ministries
  • Review and update existing legislation to ensure consistency with current policy objectives and international standards
  • Advise government ministries on the legal form and content of proposed legislation
  • Ensure drafted legislation is compatible with the Constitution of Brunei Darussalam and international treaty obligations
  • Draft amendments to existing statutes and consolidate legislation as required
  • Coordinate with the Syariah law division on legislation involving Syariah law matters

Responsibilities

  • Draft and review legislation for all government ministries
  • Advise on the legal form and content of proposed laws
  • Ensure legislative consistency and constitutional compatibility

Requirements

  • Admitted to practise in Brunei or a qualified lawyer from a recognised common law jurisdiction
  • 7-12 years of experience in legislative drafting, government legal work, or parliamentary counsel
  • Demonstrated expertise in drafting complex primary and subsidiary legislation
  • Understanding of Brunei's constitutional framework and the MIB national philosophy
  • Experience with both common law and Syariah-based legislative frameworks is highly valued
  • Fluent in English and Malay
