Job Description

State Counsel at the Attorney General's Chambers

The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) of Brunei Darussalam is recruiting a State Counsel to join its Legal Service in Bandar Seri Begawan. The AGC is the principal legal adviser to His Majesty's Government, responsible for drafting legislation, conducting prosecutions, and providing legal opinions to government ministries. This role offers a unique opportunity to serve at the heart of Brunei's legal system, working across both the common law and Syariah law frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft and review primary and subsidiary legislation for government ministries
  • Conduct criminal prosecutions before the Magistrate's Court, Intermediate Court, and High Court
  • Provide legal opinions and advisory services to government ministries and departments
  • Represent the Government of Brunei in civil litigation before the Supreme Court
  • Advise on treaty negotiations, international agreements, and bilateral legal cooperation
  • Coordinate with the Syariah Prosecutors office on matters arising under the Syariah Penal Code Order 2013

Responsibilities

  • Draft legislation and provide legal advisory services to government
  • Conduct criminal prosecutions on behalf of the state
  • Represent the Government of Brunei in court proceedings

Requirements

  • Admitted to practise in Brunei under the Legal Profession Act (Chapter 132)
  • 3-8 years of post-qualification experience in litigation, legislative drafting, or government legal work
  • Law degree from UBD, a UK, Australian, or Malaysian university
  • Strong interest in public service and the rule of law under Brunei's constitutional monarchy
  • Understanding of both the common law and Syariah law frameworks
  • Fluent in English and Malay
