Job Description

Senior Legal Counsel — Energy Contracts at Brunei Shell Petroleum

Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP), the nation's largest oil and gas producer, is hiring a Senior Legal Counsel for its in-house legal department in Seria. The role involves managing the full spectrum of energy contracts, from upstream production sharing agreements to downstream supply contracts, supporting BSP's onshore and offshore operations across Brunei's oil and gas fields.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and negotiate production sharing contracts, drilling agreements, and well services contracts for onshore and offshore operations
  • Advise on joint venture governance, partner disputes, and operating committee matters
  • Manage procurement contracts, engineering services agreements, and EPCC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning) contracts
  • Advise on environmental and HSE regulatory compliance under the Environmental Protection and Management Order 2016
  • Handle employment law matters under the Employment Order 2009 for BSP's workforce
  • Coordinate with Shell's global legal team on cross-border energy transactions

Responsibilities

  • Lead contract management for BSP's upstream and downstream operations
  • Provide strategic legal advice to senior management and operations teams
  • Manage external counsel relationships for major transactions and disputes

Requirements

  • Admitted to practise law in Brunei, Malaysia, UK, or Australia
  • 8-15 years of experience in energy law, oil and gas contracts, or corporate in-house roles
  • Law degree from UBD, a UK, Australian, or Malaysian university; LLM in Energy or International Law preferred
  • Proven experience negotiating complex energy contracts and EPCC agreements
  • Understanding of Brunei's petroleum regulatory framework and the Petroleum Mining Act (Chapter 44)
  • Fluent in English; Malay is an advantage
