Contract Solicitor — Privacy & Data Protection

Chapman Tripp is seeking a Contract Solicitor for its Technology & Privacy practice at Level 34, PwC Tower, 15 Customs Street West, Auckland. With the Privacy Act 2020 now fully in force and increasing cross-border data obligations, Chapman Tripp advises New Zealand's largest organisations on privacy compliance, data breach response, and international data transfers. This 12-month fixed-term role may lead to a permanent position.

Key Responsibilities

• Advise on Privacy Act 2020 compliance including the 13 Information Privacy Principles (IPPs) and mandatory data breach notification under Part 6A
• Handle cross-border data transfer assessments and advise on EU GDPR compliance for NZ-based clients with European operations
• Conduct privacy impact assessments (PIAs) for new technology projects and data processing activities
• Draft and review privacy policies, data processing agreements, and information sharing agreements
• Advise on Privacy Commissioner investigations and complaints processes

Requirements

• Admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand with a current Practising Certificate
• 3-6 years PQE in privacy, data protection, technology, or regulatory law
• Knowledge of the Privacy Act 2020, GDPR, and cross-border data transfer mechanisms
• Experience conducting PIAs and managing data breach responses
