Job Description
Head of Legal – Banking & Wealth Management
Banque Internationale a Luxembourg (BIL), Luxembourg's oldest private bank founded in 1856 on Boulevard Royal, is seeking a Head of Legal to lead its legal department.
BIL is a cornerstone of Luxembourg's private banking and wealth management sector. You will oversee all legal affairs for the bank, managing a team of legal counsel and advising the Executive Committee and Board on regulatory, corporate, and commercial legal matters under Luxembourg banking law.
What You Will Do
- Lead the legal department and advise the Executive Committee on strategic legal matters
- Oversee CSSF regulatory compliance and manage relationships with the regulator
- Advise on private banking, wealth management, and custody services legal frameworks
- Manage litigation, disputes, and client complaint escalations
- Oversee contract management for banking products and correspondent banking agreements
- Report to the Board and Audit Committee on legal risk and compliance matters
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the bank's legal department and external counsel relationships
- Advise the Executive Committee and Board on all legal matters
- Oversee regulatory compliance and CSSF interaction
- Manage banking litigation and dispute resolution
- Develop and implement legal policies and risk mitigation strategies
Requirements
- Admission to the Barreau de Luxembourg or equivalent qualification in a recognised EU jurisdiction
- Master in Law from a recognised European university; LL.M. in Banking or Finance Law preferred
- 12-18 years of experience in banking law with significant in-house leadership experience
- Deep knowledge of the Loi du 5 avril 1993 and CSSF supervisory framework for banks
- Experience managing a legal team and reporting to executive committees
- Fluent in English, French, and German; Luxembourgish is an advantage
