To become a lawyer in Mexico, complete an accredited Licenciatura en Derecho at a recognised university, which typically takes around 4-5 years and includes mandatory social service and a titling requirement. After obtaining your professional title (titulo), register it with the Direccion General de Profesiones of the Secretaria de Educacion Publica (SEP) to obtain your cedula profesional, the federal licence that authorises you to practise. There is no national bar exam, and joining a bar association (such as the Barra Mexicana) is voluntary. The cedula is valid nationwide and does not need to be renewed.
