Case Western Reserve University School of Law took first place at its 2024 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court tournament, winning the national championship (the West Super Regional, held in Portland, Oregon, from 29 February to 3 March 2024) and advancing to the White & Case International Rounds. The team went undefeated in Portland. Our congratulations to the advocates, their coaches, and the school.

A note on the format: in 2024 the United States national rounds ran as two simultaneous tournaments. Case Western Reserve won the Portland tournament, which its own newsroom records as the national championship for that super regional.

The championship team

Case Western Reserve's national title was won by a five-student team:

  • Elise Manchester
  • Will Baker
  • Ellie Buerk
  • Brianna Schmidt
  • Naomi Matthusen

The team was coached by Co-Dean Michael Scharf, a leading international-law scholar, with alumna Liz Safier. Beyond the championship, the team earned the 2nd Best Brief award, and Brianna Schmidt was recognised as the 2nd Best Speaker of the tournament.

About the Jessup Competition

The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is the largest moot court competition in the world, drawing teams from law schools across dozens of countries. Competitors argue a hypothetical dispute between fictional nations before a simulated International Court of Justice, testing both written memorials and oral advocacy in public international law. The competition is organised by the International Law Students Association, and its international rounds carry the White & Case name as title sponsor. Winning a national championship and advancing to the international rounds is among the highest achievements in student advocacy.
