How to Become a Lawyer in Ethiopia
Ethiopia operates a civil law system. Here is the path to practising law.
Step 1: LLB (5 years)
- Addis Ababa University — Most prestigious law school
- Bahir Dar University — Strong programme
- Hawassa University
- Mekelle University
- Several private universities also accredited
Step 2: Ethiopian Bar Association
Pass the Ethiopian Bar Association licensing examination. This covers the Civil Code, Commercial Code, Criminal Code and procedural law.
Step 3: Registration
Register with the Ethiopian Bar Association and obtain your practising licence.
Step 4: Continuing Development
Maintain your licence through continuing legal education and annual renewal.
