How to Become a Lawyer in Namibia
Namibia follows the South African model for legal qualification, requiring an LLB degree, articles of clerkship, and admission by the High Court.
Step 1: LLB (4 years)
- University of Namibia (UNAM) — Windhoek. Primary law school.
- South African LLBs (UCT, Wits, UP, Stellenbosch) widely accepted.
Step 2: Articles of Clerkship (2 years)
Complete 2 years of articles under a practitioner with at least 3 years' experience. This is longer than most SADC countries and provides deep practical training in drafting, advocacy and client management.
Step 3: Admission Exam
Pass the admission examination administered by the Law Society of Namibia covering professional ethics, practice management and advocacy.
Step 4: High Court Admission
Apply for admission as a legal practitioner of the High Court of Namibia.
Step 5: Annual Practising Certificate
Register with the Law Society of Namibia and renew your practising certificate annually.
