How to Become a Lawyer in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe's legal profession follows a Roman-Dutch common law hybrid model. Here is the path to admission.
Step 1: LLB (4 years)
- University of Zimbabwe — Most established law faculty
- Midlands State University
- Great Zimbabwe University
- Foreign LLBs accepted subject to CLE assessment
Step 2: Council of Legal Education (CLE)
Pass the CLE Bar examination and complete the practical legal training programme. The CLE covers professional ethics, advocacy, conveyancing and practice management.
Step 3: Articles of Clerkship (12 months)
Complete 12 months of articles under a registered legal practitioner. This provides supervised practical experience in court appearances, drafting and client management.
Step 4: Admission to the Roll
Apply to the High Court of Zimbabwe for admission as a legal practitioner.
Step 5: Zimbabwe Law Society
Register with the ZLS and obtain your annual practising certificate.
