Ambatovy

Ambatovy is one of the largest laterite nickel mining operations in the world, located near Moramanga in eastern Madagascar. The project encompasses a large-scale open-pit mine, a 220-kilometer slurry pipeline to the processing plant near Toamasina, and a dedicated port facility. Ambatovy represents one of the most significant foreign direct investments in Madagascar's history, with the project involving a consortium of international mining companies. The company's legal department is one of the most sophisticated in-house legal operations in Madagascar, managing mining permits under the Code Minier, environmental compliance with Madagascar's environmental charter (Charte de l'Environnement), community development agreements with local fokontany (village councils), and complex multi-jurisdictional contracts. With the mining moratorium lifted in January 2026, Ambatovy's legal team is at the forefront of navigating renewed regulatory frameworks for mineral extraction, land rehabilitation obligations, and stakeholder engagement processes.
