About Banka Slovenije (Bank of Slovenia)
Banka Slovenije (Bank of Slovenia) is the central bank of the Republic of Slovenia and a member of the Eurosystem and the European System of Central Banks (ESCB), headquartered in a landmark 1920s building at Slovenska cesta 35 in the heart of Ljubljana's Center district. Established in 1991 following Slovenian independence and a member of the Eurosystem since Slovenia adopted the euro in January 2007, Banka Slovenije employs approximately 350 staff including pravniki (lawyers), economists, and regulatory specialists. As the national central bank, Banka Slovenije is responsible for implementing the Eurosystem's common monetary policy, managing official foreign exchange reserves, ensuring the smooth functioning of payment systems, issuing euro banknotes, and maintaining financial stability. As the national competent authority within European Banking Supervision, Banka Slovenije directly supervises less significant institutions (LSIs) in Slovenia while participating in Joint Supervisory Teams for significant institutions under the ECB's direct supervision. The legal and regulatory division handles macroprudential policy under the Zakon o makrobonitetnem nadzoru finančnega sistema (ZMbNFS), banking supervision under ZBan-3, resolution planning under the Zakon o reševanju in prisilnem prenehanju bank (ZRPPB-1, Bank Resolution Act), payment systems oversight, AML supervision of credit institutions, and coordination with the European Banking Authority (EBA), Single Resolution Board (SRB), and European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB). Legal professionals at Banka Slovenije draft secondary legislation (sklepi, smernice), issue supervisory decisions, and represent the institution before Slovenian administrative courts and EU institutions.
